Nightwatch
Nightwatch (1996) is split into four parts separated by interlocking patination. Perspective is confused, and the scene is set in unidentifiable space and time. These elements reference the Medieval manuscripts that inform Kate Montgomery’s work. A cushion-like form sits awkwardly in the upper quadrant and the space between the two women is confused, adding further to their solitude. Avoidant eye contact conveys a silence and reinforces the sense of disconnection that is established by the composition.
