Kate Montgomery
Kate Montogomery is recognised for her small-scale and highly detailed paintings of interior spaces. She studied painting at the Ruskin School of Fine Art and Drawing, Oxford University (1985–88) before graduating with an MA from the Visual Islamic and Traditional Arts Department at the Royal College of Art (1990–92). Her visual style is inspired by an early fascination with Gothic book illuminations and the decorative middle ages, which she later supplemented with a study of Islamic Arts and the Moghul Empire. These visual sources lie behind the saturated colour, stylised natural forms, and mixed perspectival systems that characterise her paintings. Story-telling features prominently in her practice, but such narratives are unidentifiable in time and space. More recent inspiration for Montogomery includes the Sussex countryside, coastal walks, and Georgian and Victorian architecture in south-east England. Artist residencies include The Prince of Wales’ Institute of Architecture (1992-93) and Glyndebourne Opera House (2008). Montgomery has taught at various institutions including the Prince of Wales’ Institute of Architecture and the Royal College of Art. Awards include Egerton Coghill Landscape Painting Prize, Oxford University (1988) and The Prince of Wales’ Institute of Architecture Prize, Royal College of Art Degree Show (1992).
