Flor de Nopal
Cacti are the subject of these two artworks by Harriet Macaree. Flor de Nopal (1981) is painted with loose marks and a certain abstraction gleaned from its zoomed-in perspective. Nopal (1985) is drawn in a highly figurative style with heavy lines and sharply defined spikes. Comparing the two works illuminate the artist’s oscillating style during her eleven years spent in Mexico. Macaree describes beginning with organic abstraction, and then to expressionistic, almost cartoon-like figuration in 1985, before amalgamating both styles.
