Harassment & Sexual Misconduct
No member of the College community is expected to tolerate bullying, harassment or sexual misconduct (including sexual harassment), which are unacceptable behaviours and will not be permitted.
A safe environment, free of harassment or threat, is fundamental to the academic and social life of our community here in College and within the wider University. All members of the community must treat each other with respect and there must be a clear understanding of the types of behaviour which are inappropriate and unacceptable.
This page summarises our training, support and reporting procedures which together ensure that students, staff and visitors at the College are protected from bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct.
This page is regularly updated and is next due for review in September 2026.
In line with the University, the College defines harassment and sexual misconduct as follows:
What is harassment?
In law, the term ‘harassment’ includes:
- unwanted conduct related to personal characteristics that are protected under law, that has the purpose or effect of violating a person's dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them; and
- a course of conduct that harasses a person, including causing them alarm or distress.
Harassment can be physical, verbal or non-verbal.
What is sexual misconduct?
‘Sexual misconduct’ is any unwanted and unpermitted sexual activity. It includes (but is not limited to) behaviour that would constitute sexual harassment, sexual assault and/or rape. Sexual misconduct can take place in physical or virtual environments.
In line with the ±«²Ô¾±±¹±ð°ù²õ¾±³Ù²â’s , members of College must not engage in abusive behaviour (including harassment), sexual misconduct, or physical misconduct towards a member of the College or University community, anyone within the precincts of the College or wider University, or during a University or College activity.
Please see the University's for further information.
Staff and students may use the University to report incidents which take place in College. Please see the University page for further information; this includes information about support and advice as well as ways to report.
The College also provides both informal and formal approaches for reporting harassment and sexual misconduct:
- Students should follow the Student Complaint Procedure to make their report.
- Staff should follow the Staff Grievance procedure to make their report.
Both of these procedures describe the informal and formal routes that can be used for reporting individual instances and repeated patterns of inappropriate behaviour.
Students are encouraged to speak in the first instance with your Tutor, the Senior Tutor or Deputy Senior Tutor, or the Head of Wellbeing.
Staff are encouraged to speak with your line manager or a member of the HR team.
Where the College has reason to believe that there is a risk to the individual safety of the complainant or of another individual, or that a criminal offence has been committed, the College may take legal advice and/or inform the police before proceeding with any internal action.
