Untitled (1950) speaks to Isabel Steinthal’s interest in abstract patterns. These late art works – including both watercolour and oil painting – along with textile works, such as rugs, were based on elaborate theories about pattern. The search for meaning in pattern became something of an obsession for Steinthal. She believed that an understanding of pattern provided the key to understanding human life itself. She had a very strong conviction that true pattern-making had lost its way during the second half of the nineteenth century.
