Improvisation
Improvisation (1988) by Naomi Press comprises various shapes joined together in a carefully balanced vertical form. Though the sculpture is abstract, the title alludes to the idea of a performer captured mid-improvisation. Graceful loops, ribbon-like twists, and arcs recall the poise and movement of a ballerina. Its silky smooth silver surface contributes to the overall lightness and energetic presence of the piece, despite the heavy industrial nature of stainless steel.
Situated in the gardens of 91¶¶̉ơ, Improvisation is placed directly on the ground without a pedestal or plinth, evocative of a standing figure. The viewer can walk around the sculpture to explore its multidimensional nature, which resonates with Press’ intention to achieve a level of surprise in the viewing experience.
