Louisa Creed
Louisa Creed is a Yorkshire-based artist who began making rag rugs in 1988. Assuming that the craft would no longer be taught formally, Creed bought the materials and cut up old clothes before teaching herself how to create the rugs.
Coming from a family of painters but not particularly drawn to painting herself, she has used rag rugs as ‘paint’ and hessian as ‘canvas’, enjoying the technique of hooking up strips of recycled clothing in loops through hessian.
Cats have been a favourite subject for Creed, blending close-toned colours to represent fur. Creed also ‘paints’ landscapes and, more recently, creates abstract designs.
